Elementary Education Service Learning Projects
The idea for creating the UP Trails website came about through the planning of outdoor activities by Hannahville’s Youth Services Department. As we were searching the Internet for mountain bike trails to visit, a student said, “There should be a website that has all the trails on it”. We continued discussing the matter and decided it would make a great Service Learning project because the youth would learn about website design and creation while providing a service to the many people seeking information about the many trails in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The student driven project has grew through the years from our initial focus of mountain biking trails to now include a county-by-county table of 11 different types of trails.
The Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan is very rural. Tourism is extremely important to our economy. People come to enjoy the UP’s wilderness and natural beauty. With this in mind we have recently added Lighthouses and Waterfalls. Although we have had many requests to place advertisements on our website, we have reframed from doing so because we believe we can be of better service by remaining free of distractions and solely focused on providing information about our pride and joy, the UP!
Funding for this project was provided by Learn and Serve America which is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service. In addition to making grants, Learn and Serve America serves as a national resource on service-learning to nonprofit groups, educational institutions, teachers, faculty members, schools, and community groups. Together with the USA Freedom Corps, the Corporation is working to build a culture of citizenship, service, and responsibility. For further information, visit www.nationalservice.gov.
